![]() The level design is amazing, it's unusual for this kind of book to be able to pull this off. The world-building is top-notch, with the complex world of alien politics slowly unveiling over time. ![]() That isn't limited to the crawlers, either ! The series doesn't revolve solely around our main characters, they're all able to pull their own and would manage (perhaps not as well, or differently) without Carl and Donut. It's also fantastic to see that they all have their own things going on. The characters are deep and layered, each having their own motivations, emotions, and realistic reactions. If I had to pick one flaw, I guess it would have to be the overreliance on keeping information from the reader to create artificial suspense, as in the final part of Book 5. ![]() The prose itself is great, fitting the tone perfectly with a balanced mix of humor and existential crisis-inducing horror. I'm kinda worried about the ending but that's it. I breezed through the 5 currently released volumes in 15 days and.Įverything is perfect, almost. ![]() ![]() ![]() And he promised us something else, the most important promise of all. And though we may sometimes make ourselves blind and deaf to his presence he is beside us and around us and within us always. ![]() What he did promise was that in our suffering we would never be alone. He never promised that we wouldn’t suffer, that we wouldn’t feel despair and loneliness and confusion and desperation. Here are two of my favorites, both of them centered around death and mortality which is a major theme of the book (I apologize - they are long but I have to highlight them): “God never promised us an easy life. ![]() His sermon's are where some of the most beautiful prose appears in the book and they brought tears to my eyes. Frank's dad is one of the best characters in the book, an Atticus Finch type character, all about forgiveness and love for all despite, or maybe because of, being a veteran of World War II. ![]() The Christianity presented here is the type that makes me think about going back to the church. Thankfully Krueger handles all with grace and kindness. I am not anti-religion but a book with a strong religious message can sometimes go sideways with me. Frank's father, Nathan, is a minister and there are a lot of Christian overtones to the book. As I started it I admit was a little nervous. ![]() ![]() After earning a place on the elite Kings Row fencing team, Nicholas must prove himself to his rival, Seiji Katayma, and navigate the clashes, friendships, and relationships between his teammates on the road to state championships - where Nicholas might finally have the chance to spar with his golden-boy half-brother. Coach Williams decides to take advantage of the boys' morale after a recent victory and assigns them a course of team building exercises to further deepen their bonds. ![]() ![]() Pacat and Johanna The Mad. Sixteen-year-old Nicholas Cox is the illegitimate son of a retired fencing champion who dreams of getting the proper training he could never afford. The boys of Kings Row bout with drama, rivalry, and romance in this original YA novel by The New York Times bestselling author Sarah Rees Brennan - inspired by the award-nominated comic series by C.S. ![]() ![]() I find it incredibly sweet how they're able to be vulnerable and give each other consolation when needed. ![]() I adore the chemistry between January and Gus and how their relationship grows naturally through friendship. January expressed her disappointment about her dad and Gus shared the story of his childhood living with an abusive father. They spend weekends together to learn about the other person's genre better and I absolutely love how they gradually grew closer through their witty banters! Page by page, I feel like I get to know these characters a little better and was able to sympathize with what they're feeling. Things get interesting when they took on the challenge to write each other's genre. ![]() January then moved to a beach house in North Bear Shores and coincidentally live next door to an old college rival of hers, Augustus 'Gus' Everett-a popular literary fiction author. When she discovered a heartbreaking truth about her dad who just passed away, she was devastated and stopped believing in love. The whole story is written in first-person POV of our main character, January Andrews-author of bestselling romance novels with happily ever afters. ![]() ![]() As more and more evidence seems to point to him, he becomes a fugitive and is forced to investigate the case to save himself and possibly others.Īfter I listened to that law professor telling the various ways an innocent person can be arrested for a crime, this book doesn't seem very far fetched. Other omissions and facts along the way make him more suspicious, and eventually Joe becomes the primary suspect. Joe tries to help, but when he realizes that he knows the victim, he doesn't mention this right away, which makes Ruiz suspicious. Joseph O'Loughlin, an innocent psychologist, tries to help a detective, Ruiz, who shows up at a talk Joe is giving having to do with prostitution asking questions about a murder of what he thought was a prostitute. This book illustrates what can happen when you ignore this advice and talk too much about a crime. He made a very good case, and was followed by a policeman who surprisingly agreed 100%. ![]() I recently watched a YouTube video of a talk made by a law professor/former criminal lawyer on why you should never talk to the police about a crime, whether you are innocent or guilty. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Kennedy was born and raised in Albany, New York, the son of William J.
